Custom Corner: There Are No Strings On Me
He lights up, he talks, he’s intent on destroying the planet! Ultron Mk. 1, an amalgamation of multiple toys from Terminator to Gundam and beyond, claws himself to life with a little help from Jacey King of Little Golem Customs. Complete with sound-activated LEDs and an audio module starring his iconic film quote, this POPs technical proficiency stands on its own amid the custom POP crowd.
King’s venture into POP customization began as an experiment, trying out customization on Transformers before moving onto POPs. After finding that he enjoyed creating customs he began learning in earnest, searching for other POP customizers and groups to learn from and hone his skills. Taking inspiration from the newest “Avengers: Age of Ultron” movie and seeing what others have been able to do with toy electronics, King set to work on bringing Ultron Mk. 1 to life.
In true Ultron fashion, King strayed outside of traditional POP creation methods and pulled what he needed from toys even outside of Funko lines to piece the custom together, cutting and gluing parts as needed and including a soldering tool amongst the many in his arsenal. “I also tried to install a peace-keeping program inside it, but it instead turned into a killer bot,” King said of the process.
With its weathered paint and chipped edges, open wiring, and a menacing glow, King has successfully brought Ultron from the screen into POP toy form. Let’s just be thankful this super villain hasn’t been able to recreate himself out of Vibranium (yet)!
