Custom Corner: Yin Yang Vinyl

In Chinese philosophy, the yin-yang symbol demonstrates how opposing forces are actually complementary to and interconnected with each other.  In this custom Vinylmation series, created by Josh Edwards, that ideology embraces the duality of each character, providing a sharp contrast that draws more attention to the character’s expressions and personas.  Pulling characters from all over Disney creation, from the classic Mickey Mouse to a Star Wars Stormtrooper, Edwards pulled together a series that is attention-grabbing in its simplicity and its detail, echoing the symbol that inspired it.

Edwards began creating customs to fuel his official vinylmation collection, a growing assemblage of vinyl figures encouraged by multiple trips to Disney World.  Inspired by his surroundings, he is struck with an idea often in the most unexpected of times and places, and his process has changed over time from being template-driven to something a little more relaxed and free-handed to match that openness.  “I like to work in layers when I paint a figure,” he noted.  “I… put down my base coats then go back in and start to add in the details, that way I’m not too confined.”

The simplicity of the color palette employed in this series vividly brings out the painted details, allowing Cheshire’s crazed eyes to take on a new level of insanity and the paint drips on Mickey and Oswald seem to dribble much more actively down their surprised faces.  Like the harmony and contrast displayed in the symbol that inspired the series, each piece exhibits a perfect sense of balance in its disparities, a balance that is emphasized by clean, crisp lines that are so essential to a design with such stark color differentiation.
