Custom Corner: You Like Impressions?
Hey, hey! You like impressions? Ok, ok, just like in rehearsal. What’s this? Here’s a hint: It’s finned critters that travel in a group inside a vinyl head. If you guessed “Custom Vinylmation of a School of Fish”, you’re right! This custom, created by Jennifer Bednarski, features the school of fish from Finding Nemo and their pantomiming prowess, with Dori and Nemo’s dad, Marlin, swimming through the coral reef below. Bednarski, already an expert at painting customs, employed some unique techniques to bring the school to life in this underwater image.
When Bednarski was approached with the proposition of creating a vinyl that featured the Fish School, she jumped at the challenge. “I just couldn’t stop thinking about it,” she said. “How to portray a school of fish underwater?” Knowing that small LED lights worked well with transparent vinyls, Bednarski turned her thinking internally, rather than externally, utilizing a number of tiny channels that she drilled into the interior of the Vinylmation head to create the image. The process involved several tricky problems, among them ensuring that the fish were visible both when lit by an LED and when unlit, that the fish all appeared to be swimming in the same direction, and that the light shined in the direction she intended.
Through this unique process, Bednarski has successfully completed an impression of the Fish School that even the fish themselves would be proud of, finishing it off with the masterful painting skills that we’ve come to expect from her work. With a custom like this, we’ll all be encouraged to just keep swimming along.
