DisneyLife Launching In China

Following the launch of Disney’s own streaming platform, DisneyLife in the UK last month, Disney have now announced a partnership with China’s e-commerce company Alibaba, to launch DisneyLife in China.

DisneyLife includes a wide selection of Disney content including movies from Walt Disney and Pixar like The Lion King, Toy Story and the Jungle Book, plus books, apps, music and games. It doesn’t currently include Star Wars or Marvel content.

China is a huge opportunity for Disney, with billions of potential consumers, however as with most companies, Disney isn’t able to operate its own TV channel, which means the content will be offered via Wasu Media Network, in which Alibaba owns a stake. There will also be links to both content for Hong Kong Disneyland and the new Shanghai Disneyland included in the package.

“As we deliver on our goal to meet the needs of a consumers’ daily life, DisneyLife, launched by Ali Digital Entertainment Business Unit together with Disney, will provide the only holistic and trusted family friendly digital destination in China,” said Mr. Wei Ming, Co-President of Youku Tudou Business Group and General Manager of Alibaba Digital Entertainment Business Unit.

“Disney and Alibaba share an ambition to exceed our audience’s expectations. DisneyLife directly connects us to China’s digital population and provides millions of kids and families the ability to explore and engage with Disney,” said Luke Kang, MD, The Walt Disney Company, Greater China.

With the recent launch of DisneyLife in the UK, looking at the promotional campaign, it was very clear that this package wasn’t just going to be launched in one territory as the voice overs and actors are clearly American, so I’d expect DisneyLife to be launched in many more areas in the coming year.
