Alive Once More – Marvel’s Reveal of the Latest Spidey Event
I last reported on this year’s Spidey event back on March 18th [click here] when Marvel teased Dead No More with the image of Captain Stacy, Uncle Ben, and others possibly alive and mindlessly walking through flames. Over the last few days, Marvel has been releasing images that, along with an image released last month, form a large banner. The final image in the series was released today, showcasing the former Superior Spider-man, Doctor Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus.
Due to the size of the completed poster, you can view it here in glorious high quality.
Now as you can see from each of the new image, Marvel has revealed more information about the upcoming event. Perhaps the most revealing image was the one released yesterday featuring Gwen Stacy with the Man in Red I mentioned in my previous article. His face is now shown, although obscured with an Anubis mask. With Anubis’ ties to a real life animal, a jackal, I believe Marvel has drastically redesigned the classic [and often controversial] Spidey villain, Dr Miles Warren aka the Jackal. Dr Warren was responsible for the Clone Saga and Spider Island last time we saw him. He is also known for having a deeply disturbed obsession with Gwen Stacy [he was her professor!]. The bringing the dead back fits Jackal’s MO and if he has been able to create actual genetic duplicates [previous clones were faulty] then his conquering of death also fits the costume redesign.
A few questions stand to reason, why bring back the costume heroes? Scarlet Spider? Madam Webb? I understand bringing back the likes of Captain Stacy and Uncle Ben, if only to torment Peter, but why the heroes as well? They could handle their own, unless Jackal has them in his thrall. And Doc Oct, which version is this? Is this pre-mind swap? Then there is Gwen Stacy and her role in all of this. Although I am curious what the universe hopping Spider-Gwen would think of all this clone-baggage. As not featured in the image is the bandaged up Norman Osborn. Something important to note about his absence from the image is that Osborn was actually the one behind the Clone Saga. I stand by my theory that Jackal is behind this, however I think Osborn has taken up the mantle of the Jackal and is masquerading as Dr Warren. Let us hope that if this is true, they never bring up the horrid arc that is Sins Past. DONT ASK.
