The BFG Struggles To Compete Against Finding Dory At The Box Office
This past weekend saw the release of Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG in the US and its being reported that it has only taken $19.6 million at the box office, with a predicted total of $23.6 million by the end of Independence Day. Resulting in it being the 4th most popular movie of the holiday weekend, which has resulted in it already being branded the biggest flops of the summer and of Spielberg’s career.
One of the big reasons its struggled at the US box office, is that is has been going up against Disney’s own Finding Dory, which is expected to do double the amount over the same 4 day weekend.
Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis said “We’ve seen the way people are speaking of and rating the film. We’re hoping to be the beneficiary of some good word-of-mouth.”
There could be many reasons why the BFG hasn’t connected with audiences, such as the lack of merchandise, lack of promotion and also just releasing too close to another major Disney movie, which is set to become the biggest movie ever for Pixar, taking over from Toy Story 3.
The BFG has yet to open in many other regions, but it will continue to bring in money at the box office during the summer time with families being off, but it doesn’t look like the BFG has caught the imagination of cinema goers.
