Lin-Manuel Miranda Working on New Disney Project
Adding to an already impressive Disney resume, Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is now working on a new animated Disney film, as reported in Vulture. He is not working alone on this project, as he is joined by Byron Howard, the co-director of Disney’s Zootopia. At this point, no title or plot details were released. Miranda, as quoted in Vulture, said “That’s the fun thing about working with someone and having it go well — you go, ‘Okay, what else can we do?’ [John] Lasseter took me aside and said, ‘I have an idea: Here’s Byron, and you guys should start talking.'”. After stirring up excitement, Miranda warned that this project may not be completed for years. As fans of Hamilton and In the Heights know, Miranda takes his time to ensure perfection. In response to this, Miranda noted they “…literally haven’t gotten in the room yet, but we’re plotting”.
While starring in Hamilton, Miranda wrote songs for Disney’s Moana, as part of a team with Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina. Moana, his first project for Disney, is set to be released November 23rd. Miranda is also putting his music skills to work for Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid remake. At this point, his full role with the project is unknown, but he has previously stated he is opening to a role both behind the camera and in front. Currently, Miranda is filming Mary Poppins Returns, where he plays a lamplighter named Jack. Miranda’s love of Disney has been no secret, so he seems to be a natural addition to the Disney team.
