Disney Could Lose One Of Fox’s Best Creators

While Disney’s takeover of 21st Century Fox is set to bring lots of new content under Disney’s control, it might take a year or more for the deal to go through.  During that time, things can change and one of TV’s biggest creators, Ryan Murphy, who is behind shows like “Glee” and “American Horror Story” is apparently thinking about not renewing his deal with Fox, when his deal runs out in mid-2018.

It had been expected that he would resign with Fox, but no according to sources at Bloomberg, he could jump to Netflix or Amazon, which are becoming a much more safer bet, since they have “deep pockets and long-term commitments”.

Netflix have already won the rights to show Murphy’s newest show, “Ratched”, which is based on “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” character, and is being created through a Fox TV Studio and is set to air on Netflix in mid-2018.

Many well known creators have been leaving major networks to join streaming platforms.  Disney have recently lost producer Shonda Rhimes, who produced shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder”, to Netflix.   One of the main reasons she gave, was that Netflix would give her better creative freedom, since ABC has to appeal to a broader audience and has government standards involved, which don’t effect streaming platforms as much.

There is also talk of Fox Producer, Dana Walden, also jumping to Amazon, as she has been approached by them, plus Walden is also a close friend of Murphy, which could impact the decision.  But while the top management of these channels and networks come to terms with the Disney buyout, things could change between now and the purchase going through.
