New Mutants: Dead Souls #1 Review
The latest New Mutants mini series is Dead Souls and has six parts. The team includes Magik, Wolfsbane, Rictor, Boom-Boom and Strong Guy, who I’m not really that familiar with, but with the new movie coming out next year, I thought this might be a good miniseries to try out.
The team are now working for a corporation and are investigating a local town after a Hurricane, which is being tormented by “the Walking Dead” and even they make a joke at that too. I’ve seen so many zombie based TV shows, video games and movies, over the past few years, that the plot is a little overdone, but seeing some of the X-Men dealing with the situation is fun. However the ending seemed to come out of nowhere and without much warning, which wasn’t what I was expecting.
Magik was a standout character from this issue and I’m intrigued to learn more about her and the whole team have a nice vibe to them, especially the banter between them. We also get a small introduction to other characters but personally I would of liked a little more of that, but it does jump straight into the story, which is better for fans of the series.
The artwork is a little rough for my taste, since its very grainy, but it feels dark and brooding, almost like a teen horror show, which is what I think this series is aiming to be like. And it makes it feel a different to other comics I’m reading at the moment, so that is certainly a bonus.
OVERALL:
Coming into the New Mutants as a complete novice, this issue has done a good job in keeping my interest in the characters to keep reading the rest of the series. While this is the first part of a miniseries, it feels like a standalone issue, which is a great for new readers like me.
