Darth Vader 17 Review

Issue 17 is part five of the Burning Seas storyline and is an action pack issue that sees a full on lightsaber duel between Darth Vader and Ferren Barr and with the Empire trying to break the Mon Calamari with a full onslaught that results in millions of deaths.

The Darth Vader series is easily my favourite Star Wars comic at the moment, with its focus on the period between Episode 3 and 4, when Darth Vader and the Empire are at their strongest.

The battle between Darth Vader and Ferren Barr could have been a little more fleshed out, but the overall effect was impressive, if a little brutal, but a perfect way of building Darth Vader as a legitimate threat.

I also loved how this storyline helps set up the Mon Calamari as a major part of the resistance, though the twist of Ferren Barr revealing his plans was a master stroke, it wasn’t expected yet it makes sense, in a weird sort of way. Another great moment was how Barr used the Clone Troopers against the Inquisitors to escape.

The artwork is impressive, especially when showing the Empire Flight in action, showing the destruction of Mon Cari. The look on the King’s face during the final battle is also fantastic, since we really get to see the full emotion, which isn’t always easy with aliens.

OVERALL: Darth Vader 17 is bursting with action and a fantastic end to the Burning Sea story arc. Easily one of the best Star Wars comics I’ve read this year.
