Eight more Disney Store closures in AZ, CA, FL, GA, MD, OK, TX: 25 US total

It’s been less than three weeks since DisKingdom last reported on the Disney Store closures, and sadly, there’s another eight stores closed. This time, they’re in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Disney has refused to provide further information on the closures to one Florida newspaper, quoted below, and there’s been very little media coverage at all, perhaps overshadowed by the 28,000 terminations elsewhere in the company. A complete list of closures is listed at the end of this article.

Here’s hoping this is the last in the series of articles, that there won’t be further closures. Our thanks to everyone who commented on previous articles, to notify us of their local losses. A total of 160 American stores remain.

 

SanTan Village, Gilbert, Arizona: This regional mall only opened in late 2007, with Disney Store as one of its original units. Both the website of The Disney Store and the mall itself confirm the closure.

Inland Center, San Bernardino, California: This location opened in spring 2002, and the mall closure ended on August 31. This Disney Store location closed within the last few weeks.

Santa Rosa Plaza, Santa Rosa, California: Just a decade after the mall opened in 1982, it spent $3 million to “modernize” the interior. They managed to attract popular retailers like Victoria Secret, and the Bay Area’s seventh location of The Disney Store. The location never received a renovation, and so the store was still “pink and green” at the end. Its closure was done quietly: the mall reopened at the end of August, as of September 10, the mall was promoting Disney Store’s Twice Upon a Year sale as if it were business as usual.

Coral Square, Coral Springs, Florida: The Disney Store reopened August 31, and its last day was September 26, according to the South Florida SouthSentinel. The newspaper was told that it was “‘one of a very small number of stores not renewing a lease’ but would not provide specifics or say why.” They also refused to tell the outlet whether or not the partnership with Target was still on track. The store had opened in April 1996 as part of a renovation that added nine new stores, a carousel, a refreshed food court, and a “seaquarium.”

Town Centre at Cobb, Kennesaw, Georgia: This location was relatively new, opening in the first quarter of 2013.

The Mall in Columbia, Columbia, Maryland: In comparison, this location opened way back in October 1991, and (unlike many other stores closed) had renovated in recent decades.

Woodland Hills Mall, Tulsa, Oklahoma: During Disney Store’s heyday in the mid-1990s, there was also a location at Tulsa’s Utica Square. The state is left with one location, at Shoppes at Oklahoma City.

The Woodlands Mall, The Woodlands, Texas: Disney Store was upstairs between the entrances of JCPenney and its former owners The Children’s Place. Bizarrely, the location has yet to be removed from the mall’s website.
