First Ever Disney Store Announced as one of the 16 to Close Permanently July 14: CA, CO, DE, FL, HI, NJ, NV, NY, OH, TX, and British Columbia
The Walt Disney Company has announced another 16 store closures, bringing the total to 79 shuttered stores in the United States and Canada in 2021 alone.
Most notable among the closures is Glendale Galleria. The store was the first location in the chain, opened March 29, 1987. While it’s perhaps not a landmark shopping centre, this closure symbolically shows how determined Disney is to part with their bricks-and-mortar retail.
On Wednesday, 11 stores in the United States closed. That’s in addition to closures in France, India, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Sunderland, England’s The Bridges Shopping Centre will close June 20.
These closures nix Disney’s mall presence in three states: Colorado, Delaware, and Hawaii. Ala Moana was the first outside of the continental United States.
All three British Columbia locations will close, news that industry publication Retail-Insider broke months ago. There’s been no official word about the remainder of Canadian locations.
