Star Wars #44 Review
Star Wars #44 kicks off a brand new story arc, which sees Princess Leia head to the water planet of Mon Cala, home of Admiral Ackbar, where she tries to convince the Mon Calamari leader to join in with the Rebellion against the Empire.
As you might expect, everything doesn’t go to plan when the Empire find them, bringing the action to this issue as Han and Chewbacca distract the Stormtroopers, while Princess Leia continues negotiations.
There is also a little humor in this issue, especially with Han Solo, which is a bit of relief, it’s just a shame neither Luke Skywalker or Chewbacca get to do a huge amount, it feels like they would have been best left unused, rather than just pop up, but that might be fixed in later issues.
The art style seems to work a little better in this issue than in the previous story arc, it might be because we only see three humans, so the Mon Calamari, Stormtrooper and Droids look more natural. I also love the look of the planet, it has that Scarif beach look that appeals to me! I also liked the look of the huge fish and monsters, which reminded me of the water scene from the Phantom Menace.
OVERALL:
Star Wars #44 is a solid start to a new series and giving more backstory of the world of Admiral Ackbar is welcome. It looks great and the interactions between the characters helps forge their relationships. It’s also a good point jumping into this series if you haven’t already added this to your monthly selection.
