Top 5 Disney Cosplays At Toronto Comicon 2018
Along with offering fans a chance to meet with Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo, Toronto Comicon 2018 was attended by dozens of people in Disney cosplay. DIS Kingdom was in attendance on September 17, and has chosen the five cosplays that most intrigued, in the order they were photographed.
Here’s Marianne Jette (instagram.com/somanyjets) as Snow White. Her costume is based on fan art by Hakusai Hiro, an artist with a significant following on Twitter. Jette is a longtime volunteer with Cosplay Craftsmanship Contest, an opportunity for the many amazing craftspeople attending both this and Fan Expo Canada. Held throughout the weekend, the judges look at outfits one-by-one in a booth, discussing the techniques used by the creators.
Quail Man! I have a terrible memory for character names, but Doug’s superhero alterego is iconic enough that I recognized this cosplayer from across the room. (Amid my surprise, I unfortunately forgot to ask his name.)
I’ll admit it: I haven’t seen The Last Jedi yet. But I was drawn to this amazingly sculpted costume of one of The Caretakers of Ahch-to, or as its creator and wearer Julianna Maz describes it, a “vengeful, judgemental fish nun.” Maz has detailed the process of creating the costume on her Instagram (instagram.com/maz.made), unbelievably going from the initial sculpt to painting the latex in just a few days last week. Outside of the Disney sphere, it’s worth mentioning that she’s working on a grotesquely wonderful mask of Nickelodeon’s Nigel Thornberry.
Here’s Warrior Belle, created and worn by Krista (instagram.com/positively_riveting). There’s a lot of wonderful references in the costume. The Beast’s enchanted rose shows up on the sword, the cuff bracelet, and the shield. On one shoulder, she has a piece of armor that looks like the Beast’s face, made of clay covered in Worbla, a thermoplastic modelling material.
Finally, from Marvel’s The X-Men, Emma Frost and Mystique. Solid outfits, but beyond that Emma’s actually a Canadian celebrity of sorts. While a graphic designer by trade, Lisa Mancini built a sizeable online following even before she was a contestant on season 3 of The Bachelor Canada, as a “squirrel mom”. After building a relationship with park squirrels, she raised two squirrels that a friend found abandoned in their backyard. Mystique is murphyemilyy.
