Frozen Freefall: Snowball Fight Review

Disney’s Frozen Freefall has been one of the most popular mobile games in recent times, with over 100 million downloads and I’ve been enjoying the game on my iPad since it launched on there almost two years ago.  The game is pretty simple, there are a few different objectives, either score enough points, clear an object, complete within a certain amount of moves.  With each level passed, it increases in difficulty and there are many different unlocks to help out through these harder levels.

Disney have now released a slightly different version on consoles including the Playstation 3 & 4 and Xbox One/360.  The single player experience, feels identical to the mobile version and that’s not a bad thing.

Having the game on the big screen and with a controller brought me back to experiences playing these kind of games as a teenager such as Columns and Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine on my Sega Megadrive (Genesis).   However these type of games have a larger fan base on mobile devices because of casual gamers.

And this is where I have to give some huge credit to Frozen Freefall, this game caught the attention of my wife as she headed towards the Netflix app and many hours later, she is still enjoying the game.  I’ve spent years trying to persuade my wife to play video games, I tried SingStar, Guitar Hero, Buzz and a host of other casual games and even other games like GTA, to get her interested in games.  All of which failed, but this game got her attention without me even mentioning it to her.

That is the power of these type of games, they attract a different audience, while my wife spends hours playing Candy Crush, Freefall and Jigsaws on her iPad, to move over to a games console.   I feel these types of games should also be available on gaming consoles, that might not be popular with hardcore gamers who love the AAA games like Star Wars Battlefront, but there is a large audience out there not being serviced and these games deserve to be available on consoles.

This game feels pretty easy to use and within an hour, I had plowed through most of the early levels of the game.  Though each time it was getting harder, which is where one of my big issues with this game come into effect.  Frozen Freefall is a free game, you can play it for free but to unlock additional bonuses and special moves, you can buy additional options.  This is a part of gaming that doesn’t feel natural on consoles, I’m used to buying a game and being able to play.  Additional purchases via DLC are common, but to play this game fully without buying extra special moves requires lots of patience and practice.  I would have preferred to have paid a single fee to unlock the game, but that would go against the pay system for games like this.

There is a new two player version that allows two local players to compete against one another, which was a disappointment as I had been hoping the multiplayer version of the game could be played against another player online, through PSN or Xbox Live.  But for friends and family, this is a great way to experience the game.

Frozen Freefall: Snowball Fight is a fun game, I’m still playing it years later because its addicting and fun to play, but this should have been released years ago and I’m not a big fan of the payment system, but I’d recommend everyone try this game out since its free to download.
