Kingdom Hearts Continues… Forever!
Video games have been made off of Disney licences for years but none of the developers have been quite as ambitious as Square Enix with the Kingdom Hearts series. Pulling from characters and worlds from the Disney movies as well as Square’s own licensed video game heroes and villains, this game series has crafted an original story that has continued with every game. With 8 games already under their belt, several “remixed” games, and 2 possibly coming out this year, the story of Kingdom hearts will continue, but for how much longer?
Recently, Game Director Tetsuya Nomura, met with NowGamer where he spoke his feelings on this very question:
“The discussion of the end of Kingdom Hearts has never come up between me and Disney, so I don’t know what their intentions are. But while creating Kingdom Hearts, with each generation I think to myself ‘This should be something that can’t be accomplished by just Disney.’ It has to be something uniquely Kingdom Hearts. So it’s a matter of how long can I keep creating for Kingdom Hearts! I don’t know if the fans would enjoy it as much if it was just Disney, if it wasn’t a combination of Disney and my own creativity.”
That sounds pretty indefinite for the time being. Although that still leaves fans guessing for the Kingdom Hearts III release date. In the meantime the oddly named, Kingdom Hearts II.8 HD Final Chapter Prologue will be releasing on the PS4 later this year and will include with it: the 3DS game Dream Drop Distance [which has been remade for the console], as well as a sequel to the PSP game Birth By Sleep, and more. This will serve as a prequel to Kingdom Hearts III which will be releasing on the PS4 and XBox One in the eventual future.
With Square’s embrace of the series, do you think Disney should do the same and bring Kingdom Hearts to it’s Parks? Please leave a comment below
