Disney Infinity 2.0 Sales Drop

This week, Disney Interactive Studios released financial details and it showed a significant drop for its third fiscal quarter which ended June 27, 2015. And that is primarily down to lower sales for Disney Infinity 2.0, compared to 1.0.

“Lower operating income was primarily due to lower results from Disney Infinity and decreased sales of console game catalog titles, partially offset by the continued success of Tsum Tsum. The decrease from Disney Infinity was due to decreased unit sales and lower average net effective pricing.”

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes, was released on September 23 2014 and while it included many Marvel characters like Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man and many more characters, it was hurt by the lack of Disney characters in the game.

During the last quarter, there were only two new figure releases (Falcon & Loki), a twin pack of power discs (Captain Marvel & Falcon) and the PS Vita version of the game, which was released in May.

With Disney focusing on just Infinity, it did mean that if 2.0 didn’t sell as well as expected, it would hit harder. Disney Infinity 3.0 launches at the end of the month and has a much larger collection of figures and play sets, plus it will include Star Wars, to reignite fans excitement over Disney Infinity.

I don’t think it was intentional, but this article could be misinterpreted. The numbers don’t imply an overall drop in sales for 2.0 versus 1.0, but simply for the fiscal quarter referenced. Roger is right that the explanation for that is likely because of how little was released during the quarter.

  • Sales were also down in Quarter 2 “Interactive revenues for the quarter decreased 12% to $235 million and segment operating income increased by $12 million to $26 million . ” 2.0 was probably still very profitable but it hasn’t done as well as 1.0.. I suspect 3.0 is going to do much better numbers than 2.0
