Donald Duck #5 Comic Book Review
This week, IDW have released their latest Donald Duck comic book, issue #5 (#372), this months offering includes 4 stories, which haven’t been printed in English before.
The main story is “The Diabolical Duck Avenger”(Part 1 of 2) from Italian Topolino 706 (1969). This story explains how Donald Duck got his superpowers to become the Duck Avenger, which starts off with Donald thinking he had won a mansion but quickly discovered it wasn’t his, but Gladstone next door, which the Nephews aren’t happy about him lying and trying to keep the prize, which leads Donald to a number of different antics which are pretty funny. While in the mansion he discovers a old superhero outfit and decides to become a superhero. Sadly that’s where the story ends, which will be continued in the next episode, its a fun story but I was expecting to see a little more superhero action, but taking that away, its still a funny story about Donald Duck struggling to keep his anger at bay with his wealthy neighbour and uncle.
The next short story is called “What’s Opera, Duck?” from Dutch Donald Duck 45/2006 and sees Donald trying to get away with going to the opera with Daisy on a date while trying to listen to a football game, which as you might expect, doesn’t work out well for our Donald. This reminded me of an old Friends episode!
“Banquet Behind Bars” from Dutch Donald Duck 3/1975 is the third story and once again, Donald is taught a lesson about handing back property that doesn’t belong to him as he finds a wallet and takes the nephews out for a meal, only for it to end badly. I really liked this story, was nice and simple, though slightly similar to the Duck Avenger story that was also featured in the story, but I preferred this version.
And the final single page story is called “Donald’s Off Day” from Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories 52 (1945) and is a nice quick funny story that finishes this comic off nicely.
This comic also features a great Disneyland themed variant cover which has Donald Duck signing away at the Golden Horseshoe.
Overall a great read for Donald Duck fans, 4 stories of different length will keep fans young and old happy. I really like the mix of longer and shorter stories in these comics and who can’t love Donald Duck.
