Broadway’s Newsies to Hit Theatres Next Year
This has been a big year for Broadway fans around the world. First, Hamilton recorded two performances for future use, then She Loves Me was streamed live online, and now Disney has boarded the bandwagon. At the end of this month, Disney Theatrical Productions will be filming their hit musical Newsies. Currently on tour across North America, original Broadway cast members will be returning to reprise their roles. Tony Award nominee Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Ben Fankhauser will join the current touring cast for the recording.
Adding to the excitement further, the recording will be shown in theatres during the 2017 season. No details yet on a DVD release or theatre locations, but fans hope for a wide release. In recent years, theatre fans have expressed disappointment for their difficulty to access professional productions. Very few Broadway shows have been recorded over the years, but with steps taken by Hamilton and She Loves Me to make theatre accessible to many, fans have much to look forward to. Newsies will be released in theatres through a joint effort with Disney and Fathom Events, meaning there may be the potential for more Disney live shows to be filmed and released.
Newsies, originally a Disney movie starring a young Christian Bale, premiered on Broadway in 2012 to glowing reviews. The production was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning for Best Choreography and Best Original Score. The show ran for over 1000 performances before closing on Broadway in 2014. The National Tour began the same year, but you can still catch them across the United States until October 2nd.
