WDW Review: Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast
One of the things that I like to do during my Walt Disney World vacations is to try some of the dining offerings that are new to the resort since my last visit. One of them this past go around last month was the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast, a character dining option located at Tratorria al Forno, the new Italian restaurant on Disney’s Boardwalk. On my last morning there, my friends and I set off to visit with some of Disney’s adventuring princes and princesses: Flynn and Rapunzel from Tangled, and Eric and Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
When you are brought to your table, your group is presented with two things: a signature card (above) from the event (though the characters will sign autograph books if asked) and an Adventure Journal, which members can fill out recounting their travels throughout Walt Disney World.
Unlike most of the other character breakfasts at Walt Disney World, the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast is not a all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet or meal. Instead, it is the three course meal timed with the visits from the Disney characters. When you are seated, you are promptly presented with course one, which is a selection of themed pastries, served in a very useful frying pan. My favorite was the Corona Sun, which was a layered phyllo dough pastry. The next course is a fruit salad (not pictured).
For the third course, one could choose from seven entrees, including the three that our table got: King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno, Two-Eggs Poached Underwater, and Royale Breakfast. The Shipwreck comes out with a decorative “trident” (they make you take it out when they serve it to you), which is a fun touch. All of the meals had an Italian feel to them, and I personally enjoyed trying a bit of all three.
The cost for the meal is: For Guests Ages 10 and over: $34.00 plus tax | Ages 3-9: $20.00 plus tax. For me, it was well worth the price. The food was delicious (especially the steak part of my entree) and the service was great. I have a slight allergy to cantaloupe and honeydew melons, not realizing it would be in the fruit salad that was served. Mentioning this to my server, she came back with a special fruit salad filled with the grapes and berries of the salad that I could have.
Of course, the real draw for this meal are the characters, which are timed to coincide with one of their rotations around one side of the dining room. First in the rotation is Flynn Rider. Next up is Rapunzel. Third is Prince Eric. Last is Ariel. Since we were a group of adults who took only a few minutes of their time, I am not sure we can be the best gauge as far as how accommodating this particular group of “friends” were. However, I did not see a sad face from any of the tables around us as the characters left our area for further adventures.
As far as our encounters, they were a lot of fun… especially with Ariel, in which Kaila and I donned our “dinglehoppers”.
In addition to the meal, each of us did purchase one of the special Pascal glow clips. These normally come with the specialty kids’ drink at the meal, and in retrospect we paid $6 for Pascal and the drink was $8… so it would have been only two more dollars for the drink and cup it came it. Oh well, you live and learn. However, Pascal is awesome and currently hangs on one of my window visors in my car. He took the road trip adventure back home with me from Walt Disney World, and is ready for more adventures down the road… literally.
Overall, this meal was a lot of fun. Is it something that I would make a regular habit of going to? Probably not, as Rapunzel and Ariel (in mermaid form) have regular Meet & Greets inside the Magic Kingdom. However, if you are coming to Walt Disney World with someone who is a big fan of Tangled or The Little Mermaid, this would be a great place to have breakfast. And who knows, with the popularity of Moana, I would not be surprised if another wayfarer or two joins the adventure at Trattoria al Forno every morning. If that happens, I might just be back.
