Marvel Heroes Omega Closing Down
Today it was officially announced by Gazillion that “Marvel Heroes Omega” will be shutting down on PC and Consoles. The game will be playable until December 31st 2017, when the servers will be turned off. The company will also be removing all real money purchases very soon and they will also be making the game entirely free as soon as they can.
In a statement on the website Gazillion said:
We’ve had the privilege of entertaining and collaborating with our players for over four years. We’re extremely humbled by that privilege and wanted to get this message out: Thank you. Thank you to our players, our tireless employees, and everyone involved in the life of Marvel Heroes, Marvel Heroes 2015, Marvel Heroes 2016, and Marvel Heroes Omega.
This continues the trend of Disney closing down “online” game services, though details on why Disney decided to end its relationship with Gazillion haven’t been revealed. However this news doesn’t come as a huge surprise to many players of the game, as the company went silent a month ago following allegations about its CEO, with the game receiving no updates including previously announced Halloween and Thor Rangarok content. Also key members of staff had left the company in the past few weeks, adding to the speculation.
Marvel Heroes Omega released on the console this past spring and the PC version was also set to be transferred over to the “Console” version this month. The PC version had a its “biggest update ever” earlier in the year, which was very unpopular with gamers, which has left the game losing players week after week. While the game was suppose to get a shot in the arm with its console release, the PC version was left with barely any updates. Multiple sources told Kotaku that there were at least three rounds of layoffs within the first year of release.
As a player of the game myself, I’m disappointed Marvel Heroes Omega is shutting down, I’ve really enjoyed playing the game since it was released on consoles and new content always brought me back in, unfortunately it never was able to deliver the content that players needed, since the team was too small to add constant new content, to bring players back regularly.
