Review: Hasbro’s New Disney Princess Collection
It’s only a week left before Christmas comes, and some of you might still be looking for gifts for Christmas. With that in mind, our friends over at Hasbro sent me over some items from their newest Disney Princess Collection to take a look at. Included in this review are a couple of the Royal Shimmer Fashion Dolls, the Pop Up Palace Playset, and a few of their Series 1 Gem Collection Figure Surprise. All of these items are available at most major retailers like Entertainment Earth, and over at HasbroToyShop.com. Let’s take a closer look.
Royal Shimmer Fashion Dolls
(Ages 3 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $9.99/Available: Now)
Kids can play out their favorite magical story moments with the DISNEY PRINCESS ROYAL SHIMMER FASHION Doll assortment, each dressed in their movie-inspired signature colored gown embellished with a glitter pattern. Each doll comes with an outfit and pair of removable shoes. Choose your favorite DISNEY PRINCESS: ARIEL, AURORA, BELLE, CINDERELLA, JASMINE, MERIDA, MULAN, POCAHONTAS, RAPUNZEL, SNOW WHITE, and TIANA. Each doll sold separately.
For review, I received Jasmine and Cinderella. Unfortunately, not all of the dolls can stand on their own in their shoes, and Jasmine is one of them. Cinderella I was able to get to stand up on her own accord. Note: the packaging does state that the dolls do not stand on their own, I just like the dolls better for review/ display purposes when they do.
I really like the way that Hasbro has taken the Disney Princess license and created some really great looking dolls. While they have the normal points of articulation for a regular doll (shoulders, neck, and hips), they have decent mobility for display purposes. I also really like their “Royal Shimmer” outfits.
Pop Up Palace Playset
(Ages 3 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $49.99/Available: Fall 2018)
Kids will love recreating magical moments from their favorite DISNEY stories with the DISNEY PRINCESS POP UP PALACE playset! Pull on the top handle and this royal castle extends up to 2-feet tall. Each room is themed for a different DISNEY PRINCESS movie. Inside the DISNEY PRINCESS POP UP PALACE playset are DISNEY PRINCESS movie-inspired accessories such as a shell-shaped bathtub, rose detailed table and chair, royal lounge seat and more! The DISNEY PRINCESS POP UP PALACE playset is a playset for kids to imagine their favorite movie moments and also doubles as a carrying case to take their play on the go! Dolls sold separately.
I personally do not get into the doll playsets if I am collecting a certain line, partially because of space but mostly because I display the dolls instead of actually full on playing with them. To be honest, most of the dolls that I do get stay in packaging when get displayed, or are lines that don’t see playsets (like Living Dead Dolls or the limited edition Disney Store Princess ones). However, if you or your children do play with your dolls (which is the norm), this is a wonderful, and portable, playset to have. I especially like the theming to the different Princesses both inside and outside the castle. My favorite theme detail is Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather with Aurora’s birthday cake, which can be seen fully inside the castle, but also through a window on the outside of the castle. I also appreciate seeing so many “sidekicks” around the castle.
It really is a very fun playset, and hours of imagination can come from it. (Fun fact: after I took pictures of these items this weekend, I gave them to my landlord’s children to play with. She has a little girl and boy, I believe ages 6 and 5. I was told that the rest of their Disney Princess dolls…. and some of their male counterparts… were freed from their storage totes and the kids had adventures all yesterday afternoon.)
Gem Collection Series 1 Figure Surprise
(HASBRO/Ages 4 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $4.99/Available: December 1, 2018)
DISNEY PRINCESSES are full of surprises, and there’s always a surprise with the DISNEY PRINCESS GEM COLLECTION. Which DISNEY PRINCESS will your kid get? It’s a fun guessing game since the gem-shaped package doesn’t reveal the figure until kids open it! Once kids open it, they can flip the piece that’s inside around and slip it into the case to create a delightful background for the figure to be displayed in. The backgrounds are special for each DISNEY PRINCESS. Plus, the gem cases connect to each other so all the figures can be displayed together! Each sold separately.
Mystery packages seem to be everywhere these days, and I will admit that I have gotten my fair share in hopes of getting a full set or a special rarer character. For this collection, Hasbro beautifully sculpted some of the Disney Princesses and included them with some special backgrounds inside a colored gem. The three I was sent contained Snow White, Tiana, and Mulan.
Another fun feature is the interlocking ability for the gems to connect together to make a single display for the Princesses.
All in all, this a very strong showing from Hasbro for the Disney Princesses for the holiday season. I know many of my friends’ children who would love to get these items as gifts, and I have a feeling the Gem Collection will be especially popular, given their great design and quality. I might even pick up some more myself to see who I get.
