Disney Store: Next 11 closures are stores in CA, NJ, NY, UT, leaving KY, PR

The Disney Store closing saga continues, unfortunately. Kentucky and Puerto Rico are both loosing their last locations, while select stores in California, New Jersey, New York, and Utah are also closing.

The closures were announced on The Disney Store location list today. They are:

  • Bayside Marketplace, Miami, Florida
  • Bridgewater Commons, Bridgewater, New Jersey
  • Cherry Hill Mall, Cherry Hill, New Jersey
  • Crossgates Mall, Albany, New York
  • Destiny USA, Syracuse, New York
  • Fayette Mall, Lexington, Kentucky
  • Main Place Santa Ana, Santa Ana, California
  • Plaza Las Americas, San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Puerto Rico Premium Outlets, Barceloneta, Puerto Rico
  • University Mall, Orem, Utah
  • Westfield Culver City Mall, Culver City, California

Disney announced in March that it would be closing 60 stores in North America, as part of a push towards ecommerce. The first 40 closures were announced that month, five more closures announced in March, and seven more closures announced in April. That last set closed yesterday, May 19.

So between the 52 closures so far in 2021, and the 11 closure announced today, we’re already at 63. That’s even without the closure in Winnipeg, confirmed by the mall but not Disney, and the 15 other closures reported by Retail-Insider.com. That’s also not counting the closure of the store at Bon Accord Centre, Aberdeen, Scotland or the pop-up store in Warrington, England, both outside of North America.

After these confirmed closures, there will be 101 stores remaining in the United States. Japan has 46, the United Kingdom has 35, Canada has 16 (of which 8 stores are temporarily closed), and Ireland has three locations. That’s 201 stores worldwide.

As mentioned previously, these were the only remaining locations in both Kentucky and Puerto Rico.

Two locations of The Disney Store opened in Kentucky in 1993: Louisville’s Oxmoor Center and Lexington’s Fayette Mall. The soon-to-close location was part of a new wing that opened on May 4, 1993. The shopping centre jumped from the fourth largest mall in the state, to first place. The addition brought a variety of new stores, including American Eagle Outfitters, The Body Shop, Suncoast Motion Picture Co., and One Hour Photo.

Puerto Rico’s earliest locations were in San Juan’s Plaza Las Americas and Hatillo’s Plaza del Norte, both of which opened in the summer of 1992. Barceloneta’s Puerto Rico Premium Outlets opened in 2010, making this outlet a rather newer location of The Disney Store.

In New Jersey, Bridgewater’s Bridgewater Commons is the first Disney Store outside of California, and only the fourth ever location. It opened way back on June 18, 1988. And Cherry Hill’s Cherry Hill Mall is only a tad younger, having opened in September 1989. Miami’s Bayside Marketplace opened in August 1991.
