Review: New Marvel Quote Book a Crowd-Pleasing Stock-Stuffer
As core to comics as the illustrations are, a great story is essential. Marvel’s delivered that for decades, and some of the writers’ bon mots became eminently quotable.
New in bookstores and online on October 7, Marvel Comics Classic Quotes: Quotes Assemble! Insights from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes collects a few dozens of these lines in book form, paired with segments of panels and covers from the same eras. Set in large, bold, Futura type, the quotes deliver a visual whollop.
While it’s obviously a quick read, it nonetheless makes a nice coffee table book. It’s a wide cross-section of Marvel Comics’ iconic characters, with just one quote only from anyone who made the cut. Spread over 96 pages, there’s a healthy variety of decades represented, from the earliest issues to recent releases.
The broad but brief focus of this title will be followed up in January with The Wit & Wisdom of Spider-Man: Quotes & Life Lessons from Your Favorite Superhero, also chosen by author Robb Pearlman.
Pearlman is extremely prolific, with 80 books to his name. For Cedar Mill Press, his previous titles include Fun with Dick and Jane parody Fun with Kirk and Spock, and Search for Spock, an elaborately illustrated image search book.
Marvel Comics Classic Quotes is a crowd-pleasing stocking stuffer, but hopefully also the intro of a continuing series of deep-dives, starting with Spider-Man.
A digital copy of this book was provided through NetGalley.
