Disney Infinity 3.0 Twilight Of The Republic Review

Star Wars fans will have a treat with the Twilight of the Republic play set for Disney Infinity 3.0, this play set is available to purchase individually or as part of the 3.o Starter Pack and consists of a play set interactive game piece and two figures, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.

Twilight of the Republic is a brand new story and features characters from the Prequel movies (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) and the Clone Wars cartoon series.   Other characters include Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi will be available at launch, plus Darth Maul will be coming in November.

One cool new feature introduced to the Star Wars play sets, following the positive feedback from last years crossover coins, all the other Star Wars characters from the classic trilogy like Darth Vader, Star Wars Rebels characters like Ezra and the soon to be released, Force Awakens characters will all be able to play within this play set after the player finds a coin for that specific character.  This is a great addition to this play set as it will bring in different characters to add more re-playability to this play set, as each character plays slightly different.

This play set was created by UK studio, Ninja Theory, who had previously worked on games like Devil May Cry and its their first play set they have created for Disney Infinity, however they had worked on some of the fighting skills on 2.0’s Jasmine figure.   So as you might expect, this play set is very fight oriented, with the fighting mechanism within the game having a major overhaul from previous versions.  The new lightsaber fighting has made this game so much more fun and the inclusion of the Force, makes each of the Jedi’s feel much more powerful and generally just a lot of fun.

While fighting is the main focus on gameplay, there is also flying, exploration and racing sections included in the game, which adds to the variety.   One issue with the play sets from 2.0, was they all felt very similar and had too much time in one location, the Twilight play set doesn’t have this issue, with players visiting different planets including the sand planet of Tattonie, the city planet of Coruscant, robot factories on Geonosis, palaces on Naboo plus battle in space.    These areas are all open world, so there is plenty to space to roam around plus little touches like extra characters, vehicles and things to see.

Twilight of the Republic feels like an interactive episode of the Clone Wars cartoon series, it has the same look and feel of the cartoon and that is a huge bonus.  Throw in all the big theme tunes from John Williams and great looking cut scenes which give it the feel of Star Wars, though some of the voice actors aren’t the originals, but that’s pretty common in gaming.

It is possible to charge through the main story line in the game within 3 to 4 hours, there are still plenty of side missions, collectibles and toys to unlock for the Toy Box that will require more time in the play set.  Disney have also added new options to go back and replay missions, improve your score and time, which adds to the replay value and with additional Star Wars characters from the Classic Trilogy, Force Awakens and Rebels able to join in, there is good reason to jump back into this play set again and again.

Twilight of the Republic feels much more fun, Disney wanted each play set to feel different to not only one another, but also within itself, so having battles on different planets, boss fights, pod racing and space battles, all make the play set feel very enjoyable.

Taking the cost of the two figures out of the price, does mean the actual game piece is only around $5 and I certainly feel this is worth much more than that, as the two figures Anakin and Ahsoka are fantastic figures plus they can be used within the other Star Wars play sets, expansion games and in the Toy Box, plus they are forward compatible with future versions of the game.  Plus the play set unlocks dozens of new toys for the Toy Box, which is more content for years to come.

Overall, Twilight of the Republic is a lot of fun and while we maybe wished it was a little longer, it does offer plenty of replay value.    The story mode is entertaining and reflects the Clone Wars era very well, Star Wars fans are going to love this play set.  I loved playing through this play set and the whole package just suits the Disney Infinity style so well, it feels like one of the best Star Wars games I’ve played in a while as it doesn’t take itself too seriously but offers plenty of enjoyment with a wide range of different content.
