Cloak & Dagger Are Coming To TV
Marvel is bringing yet another new show to television, this time starring the teen heroes, Tyrone and Tandy aka Cloak and Dagger. Currently in development, it will be the first Marvel series to run on ABC’s Freeform [formally ABC Family] channel. Variety reports that the new series “follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love.” Perfect for the Freeform network, which is re-branding itself to be more like the CW with young adult shows such as Shadowhunters.
Jeph Loeb, comic writer and Head of Marvel TV, spoke of his own excitement regarding the announcement. “We are thrilled to be able to explore another corner of the Marvel Universe with Cloak and Dagger,” said Loeb, head of Marvel Television. “We want to thank Tandy and Tyrone’s fans everywhere who have been waiting for this exciting news.”
Cloak and Dagger are certainly fan favorite heroes with more of a cult following than mainstream stays of Captain America and Spider-man. The two heroes, who were introduced in the 80s, are not only partners but lovers who after being forced to take an experimental drug [with demonic properties], are revealed to have had dormant mutant abilities. Cloak becomes linked to the Darkforce dimension, which allows him to envelope things in darkness and Dagger develops an ability to wield “light daggers.” Interestingly enough, a dark empty dimension and a mysterious substance called zero matter were recently huge proponents in the Agent Carter TV series. Although Cloak and Dagger has yet to be confirmed to exist within the same universe, it seems as though MCU has already started on the groundwork for this new series.
With the arrival of Cloak and Dagger on Freeform, can this new series stay true to the more mature roots of the comics? Please comment below.
