Buzz Lightyear Revoltech Review

Figures of the characters from Toy Story have been made numerous times, and with the release of Toy Story 4 it is a guarantee they will keep being made into the foreseeable future. Today we start our look at the three characters made by Kaiyodo in the Revoltech line. To start off is everyone’s favorite Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear! Let’s get to it!

Sculpt 3/5

While this is a pretty good sculpt there is a couple things that bug me about it. The main one being he seems to be a little short compared to Woody and Jessie. He seems to be a tad under scaled.

buzz02

Also the sculpt on the normal face just seems to have something off. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is though. The serious face is spot on.

buzz03

All of the buttons on Buzz are greatly sculpted. They almost look like real buttons you could press. His helmet is nicely sculpted too and can be easily removed.

Paint 5/5

The paint details on Buzz are top notch! All of the “stickers” are greatly detailed. The paint on both head sculpts are perfect with no slop. All of the colors are accurate to the film version. He even has Andy’s name written on the bottom of his foot. The only negative I could think of is he doesn’t glow in the dark. It would have been a neat extra, but is not needed.

Articulation 4/5

Revoltech figures are know for their innovative joint system and Buzz utilizes it the best he can. Sadly the design of Buzz hinders most of the movement in his arms. I will get into that in a bit. First let’s go over his points of articulation.

buzz06

Buzz has a revoltech joint in his neck, shoulders, elbows, wrist, torso, hips, knees and ankles. They all provide a good range of movement and also allow for the parts connected to the joints to be removed to help with posing the figure. Buzz also has articulation in his helmet to move to the halfway point. His thumbs both offer extra points of articulation using ball joints. His fingers are all one piece and are on a hinge joint so you can close the hands to kind of make a fist. Both faces have articulated eyes so you can pose the eyes to look in various directions with the pose you want to place him in. Or you can just give him cross eyes if you want!

His arms also swing out at the shoulders. This is done so you can put him in a pose like he is using his laser. Sadly this doesn’t work so well. It just looks weird and he can barely reach the laser button with his hand. While this is something Buzz does quite a bit in the films, this is just something that his design prevents him from doing in the real world.

Accessories 5/5

buzz04

While Buzz doesn’t come with alternate hands like many Revoltech figures do(he actually has one, but it is packed with Woody and will be included in that review.) he does come with some great accessories.

First up is a little box to store extra pieces. It is nice, but really doesn’t hold much of the stuff Buzz comes with. He also has a nice little name plate with his name and the film he is from. You know in case you forget who he is or what movie he was in.

I already went over the alternate face plate in the sculpt category. It is easy to switch just pull on the face and it comes right off and just replace it with the alternate.

Buzz also comes with a set of wings. To attach the wings you have to remove the little piece on the back that looks like his wings folded up.

buzz08

Once removed the wings just pop into the sides.

buzz09

Hands down though the best accessories have to be the green army men. They are scaled pretty well to fit in a display with the figures.

buzz11

The sculpts on all three are well done. They even stand better than regular green army men.

The only other thing I think could have been included is a alternate forearm with the communicator flipped up. It would have added another great way to pose Buzz on the shelf.

Overall 4.5/5

Overall Buzz is a great figure. The only downside is he seems a tad too short and the shoulder articulation is a little wonky. If you are a big fan of Buzz or just want him to have the complete set I say get him. I paid $40 including shipping for mine. I wouldn’t pay more than that though.

Join us next week as we take a look at everyone’s favorite yodeling cowgirl Jessie!
