Game Informer’s June Issue Sheds Light on Disney Infinity 3.0

DI 3.0

When Game Informer officially broke the news earlier today about Disney Infinity 3.0 by posting the image of their June cover (seen above), I was as excited as one could be walking into a dentist’s office (yup, where I currently was heading). When I emerged almost two hours later, with a root canal scheduled for next week, the official trailer was minutes away from dropping. By the time I made my way to a computer to view the Toy Box TV episode, I already had most of the information on the reveal from PMs and tweets. However, nobody was talking much about the GameInformer articles inside the issue, which was released today ahead of the print ad. Since you need to be a subscriber to read it, it didn’t surprise me that I wasn’t hearing much from the community. So, I pulled up my computer chair and got to reading… and what I read made me giddy.

Here is a rundown of the highlights:

1. Chat with John Blackburn and John Vignocchi about 3.0, the inclusion of Star Wars, and the ending of a three year launch, which began in 2013 with the release of what is now referred to as “1.0”.

2. A talk with Ninja Theory and how they brought their fighting skills to Disney Infinity, revamping the combat abilities of the characters so now ALL of them, including the 1.0 characters, have a more seamless fighting style.

3. A look at the two newly revealed Star Wars Play Sets and fun things that can happen in them, including a revamping of character crossovers with the coins and how the timeline can be played with (such as Anakin fighting alongside Luke).

4. A new ability in Play Sets: replaying missions within the Play Set without having to reset the game (akin to “Free Play” mode in the Lego games, I’d imagine), and rewards for completing the missions under certain objectives.

5. New Toy Box experiences, including:

~ A gumball-style vending machine.

~ A new version of the Toy Box Tutorial, where you bring color to the world by completing objectives.

~ The ability to farm (actual crops, not experience points), and use those crops to power up your sidekicks that you are to use in…

~ Villain Takeover, a new Toy Box Expansion Game, where you try and rescue the Toy Box Magic Wand from Syndrome, who has set up 15 levels of baddies for you to fight. Unlock special rewards by defeating the villains and completing objectives set forth by Merlin throughout different themed lands. It’s a trumped up “Escape from the Kyln”.

NOTE: At first glance, this sort of has the feel of Disney Infinity’s version of  the Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom game at Walt Disney World… maybe because I play that game as much as I can while vacationing at WDW.

~ Toy Box Raceway, another Toy Box Expansion Game (each sold separately), Disney Infinity’s version of Mario Kart, complete with cups to race for, tracks to race on, and different engine classes.

~ The addition of the El Capitan Theatre to the Toy Box, which will be the center of user-generated content. Through movie posters inside the theatre, players can view and then play the best community toy boxes out there, or take some time to relax and view the latest episode of Toy Box TV.

~ The removal of Power Disc Blind Packs, to be replaced with themed blister packs. Happy that the discs are staying around… remains to be seen if they will remain popular as blister packs, as each disc really needs to be a hit in that case.

If you have a Game Informer subscription, I suggest you take some time to read up on Disney Infinity 3.0, as I just gave highlights from the 16-page spread. Want to download the issue and read it for yourself? I got my copy for $4.99 from Google Play with my gmail account. Best five bucks I have spent in a while.

Happy Reading!
