Disney Holiday Showcase: Avengers Playmation

While at the Disney Holiday Showcase last week, I had a chance to play test the new collection of “smart technology” line of toys and wearables called Playmation. What I got to test out was the Starter Pack. Here is the official information from the event:

Playmation is a groundbreaking system of toys and wearables uses smart technology to inspire kids to run around and use their imaginations, as they become the hero or heroine of stories from acress The Walt Disney Company.

Jump into the Playmation Marvel’s Avengers universe with your first four locations: NYC, Raft, Wakanda and Dinosaur, plus 25 missions right out of the box (no app/ internet required). More locations and missions available from the AvengersNet app. Collaborate or compete with other recruits in multiplayer mode.

My play test of Playmation pitted me, wearing Iron Man’s Repulsor Gear, against Iron Skull, who was stationed on one of the Power Activators. The Repulsor Gear can be fitting with different weapon settings. This go around, I was working with an ion cannon, missile barrage, and repulsor blast… as well as a blocking ability. The objective was to fire at the Activator while dodging the attacks set forth by Iron Skull. I will admit, I was hit a few times (you can feel the repulsor rumble when you get hit as well as when you fire your weapons), as I am not the most agile of people. Also, the fit on my arm was not as precise as it should be, so I had a bit of difficulty firing some of the weapons because my wrist didn’t bend far enough in one direction or the other. Overall, however, I enjoyed my 5 minutes demoing this game.

I could easily see this being a hit with kids, and keeping them active inside the house. When teamed up with the app, you can unlock tons more training and combat missions, and they are planning on adding more missions in the future.

I also was able to take a look at the other characters coming out, which will retail at $14.99 each, and unlock additional in game and on app content.

Overall, will I get Playmation? Seeing as a lot of my gaming money will go into Disney Infinity this fall, and I have no kids to enjoy the game with, chances are that I will not invest immediately in the system for the Starter Pack and then the figures (which is what I would be collecting). I might get it down the road after I get done with some Infinity. However, for parents with children who the want an interactive gaming system to keep them active indoors, this is a perfect option. I am looking forward to the future of this new property, seeing as they have announced future versions with Star Wars and Frozen themes.

Are you looking forward to Playmation? Will you be picking it up for you or your kids to play? Let us know.
