Disney Holiday Showcase: Disney Movies Anywhere App

While at the Disney Holiday Showcase last week, I had the opportunity to visit with Jennifer from Walt Disney Studios- Motion Pictures and learned more about the Disney Movies Anywhere App. Now, being a part of Disney Movie Rewards, I was aware of Disney Movies Anywhere, as they work together to bring the most reward to the code found inside of a selection of Blu-rays and DVDs you own or purchase.

Disney Movies Anywhere is an app that serves as a hub for all of your Disney Digital content, both from entering codes in from your tangible movies (that include a digital copy) to ones you purchase online through places like iTunes, Vudu, and Google Play. If you are connected to the internet at that time, you can stream right then and there. Once more, you can download these movies directly to your digital device (iPad, smart phone, tablet, PC, etc) to watch at your leisure offline.

You can also keep track of your Disney Movie Rewards points in the app, but it appears that to redeem, you have to be on either the DMR website or app. However, for those who don’t visit DMR often, it’s a nice little way to keep track of your points it you are trying to save up for something special.

To try out the service, I was given two codes for movies I did not own digitally yet: the recently released McFarland USA, starring Kevin Costner, and the perennial favorite in my household, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Of course, entering the code was super easy on my iPad, once I downloaded the app. I then had to connect to a valid account (I used my iTunes account) to verify it. One of the cool features of this is that it doesn’t matter where you make the purchase of the movie (iTunes, Google Play, Vudu), all of them will unlock the movie in this. Pretty cool, especially if you find a great deal from Google Play, but you normally buy from iTunes.

What’s really cool about this app is that, since I logged on with the same Disney account that my Disney Movie Rewards account is linked up to, I believe all of my digital movie unlocks moved directly over to this app. It saves me hours from hunting down and entering a bunch of codes into the app.

Last night, since it was raining something fierce outside, I took the Disney Movies Anywhere App for a test run, where I streamed McFarland USA on my iPad while calling it an early night in bed. Now, I routinely watch streaming content on my iPad, from apps including Hulu, Food Network, Fox Sports Go!, ans NBC Sports. From time to time, I will get a grainy quality to the content (doesn’t help that my wireless internet has its’ moments). However, the picture on Disney Movies Anywhere was pretty crystal clear, and it was enjoyable not having to have to watch the movie from my television in the living room.

In addition to the actual movie, with some movies you also get bonus content unlocked, some of which is exclusive to the app itself. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I watch all of the additional content that is offered to me on my Blu-rays, DVDs, and not digital selections, but having that content there is nice. It is very accessible and clear on what kind of extra content it is, which is a plus. I ended up watching the extra “McFarland Reflections”, where Kevin Costner sits down with the members of the running team that inspired this movie. It was a fun little extra to watch.

What do I like about most about Disney Movies Anywhere? It wasn’t content that, aside from the new codes they gave me, I didn’t already have. I simply downloaded the app and, once synced to my account, I had access to all of the digital movies I already had unlocked through Disney Movie Rewards. If I knew it was going to be this simple, I would have downloaded it sooner. It really was a no brainer for me to add to my iPad.

The Disney Movies Anywhere app can be downloaded for iOS devices thru and Android devices, and can be used on PC devices. For more information, you can visit Disney Movie Anywhere’s website.
