Custom Corner: Zombified Disney

You hear a couple news reports echoing through the TV and pay them no mind.  You hear screams and growls from down the street, bouncing off the merry-go-round, and you walk by.  A decaying arm reaches out from the darkness and grabs you as you roll by in your ride buggy and you can’t deny it anymore: Zombies are rising from the dead this week in the heart of Disney.  It started with Scrooge McDuck, while swimming through his glittery wares a deadly mishap resulted in an undead McDuck.  Roger Rabbit tried to warn the crowds, but his stuttering anxiety took hold shortly before the walking dead did and Abu, while fast enough to save his human companion wasn’t fast enough to save himself.  Grumpy and Anger, letting their emotions get the better of them, tried to fix the problem to no avail.  Even Figment, flying high above the crowds, could not be spared from the apocalypse.

Zombified by customizer Celeste Villanueva, the figures’ crazed eyes and deteriorating limbs are a painterly match to their notched (or missing) ears.  Their weathered toe tags, indicating their cause of death and showing wear from their undead ventures, adds a touch of humor to the zombie design.  With a lifelong passion for art and being a huge Disney fan, Villanueva’s discovery of vinylmations, and successive dive into creating custom vinylmations, was a perfect combination of her interests.  When mixing the joyful fantasy of Disney with the horror of the undead, Villanueva strove to add some humor to the zombified figures with their cartoonish features and with the information on their toe tags.

Combining polar opposite ideas together into one figure is a challenging feat, one which Villanueva carried out flawlessly.  Each figure is a perfect mix of deranged undead creature and classic fairytale character, without feeling two whimsical or too horrific.  A perfect combination for Disney fans this time of year in particular, these figures are sure to be at the forefront of our imaginations this Halloween.
