Super Star Wars Review – PS4 & PS Vita

With the launch of Star Wars Battlefront game and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, Disney Interactive have re-released the classic Super Nintendo title, Super Star Wars onto the PS4 and PS Vita. And if your up for a classic challenge, Super Star Wars will give

Having this title as a cross-play experience does help offer more value, as being able to take the game away and play on the bus, plane or work, plus it is easier on the eye on the PS Vita as the big screen isn’t friendly for these older games (I used to play on a 14 inch TV back in the days).

Personally, I found the price tag of £8/$10 for this 20+ year old game, does feel a little steep, while Star Wars fever is in full swing, it hasn’t dated that well and is fun for a trip down memory lane, I felt it was overpriced.

One of the good additions to this game is the ability to save your progress (back in the SNES days, this wasn’t common), which means it’s easier to pick up where a player left off and also possible to complete the game easier with constant saving and allowing time to master each level or boss. With a few different difficultly settings that vary from easy to super hard (Jedi), which will give anyone wanting a challenge a chance to test their Jedi skills and a little replay-ability.

This game features many different gaming styles with the majority of the game being a side strolling shooting and running game that was all rage at the time, it also features epic boss battles and driving sections.   There are also lots of challenging platform sections and while the main playable character for this game is Luke Skywalker, later in the game, Han Solo and Chewbacca become playable.

My memories of this game have played tricks on me, compared to modern standards, this game just didn’t keep my attention on my PS4, especially when I had Star Wars Battlefront available.  However it’s a nice title to pick up and have a blast on my PS Vita, which seems to be a natural fit for me for these style of games, simple and fun.

I love that Disney are bringing some classic titles out of the vault and onto newer consoles, remembering history and recapturing some classic moments is great, we do it with other forms of media but gaming is often focused on the latest, Super Star Wars is a nice trip down memory lane, even if some players might charge through the game in hours, it can be as hard or as easy as you wish.

Super Star Wars is a great retro game and for die-hard Star Wars fans or those older fans who want to relive some classic moments, this is a good purchase but for younger audiences, this might be too retro.

Here is some gameplay footage from Super Star Wars:
