Star Wars: The Force Awakens Smashes Records

There can be little doubt that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been a huge success for Disney and the movie has broken lots of records and brought in more than its $200 million budget in its first weekend.   And the movie will continue to make more money during the holiday season and it will launch in China in January (which is why it didn’t beat the record made by Jurrasic World earlier this year).

Men made up the bulk of ticket buyers, comprising 58% of the opening weekend audience. Adults represented 71% of the crowd with families accounting for 20% of consumers. The film, with its inter-galactic battles and space-hopping adventures, played particularly well in premium formats — 3D showings accounted for 47% of tickets sales, Imax made up 12% and premium large formats were responsible for 7%.
