Star Wars: Episode VIII To Be Darker?

When the credits of Star Wars: The Force Awakens began to roll, fans the world over were instantly jettisoned into yet another whirlwind of speculation and mystery, wondering what exactly Episode VIII and the future of the franchise held.

During a recent interview with Vogue UK, recent BAFTA Rising Star nominee, John Boyega, has revealed a morsel about the tone of the upcoming sequel. “It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited.” the 23 year-old Attack the Block star told reporters, echoing his costar Daisy Ridley’s recent praise of the new script.

When asked about lightsaber training, the actor responded, “My part in the next film will be much more physical so I might be in the gym a bit more.” Fans hope to see more of the exiled stormtrooper’s origin story in the next film, possibly explaining his epiphany on Jakku regarding his loyalty to the First Order.

This narrative would definitely demand a more sinister vibe, and it seems that’s precisely what fans will get. john boyega

The news of the upcoming chapter being darker and perhaps more violent comes as welcome news, yet is unsurprising seeing as Rian Johnson of Looper and Brick fame is at the helm. The director’s past 2 feature films have been gritty, entrancing, and dark, which will fit the mood of Episode VIII very well seeing as it’s following the death of the man who made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters May 26, 2017.
