Historic Hollywood Studios Icon To Be Taken Down + More Closures

The transformation of what the universe knows as “Hollywood Studios” continues as a slew of attractions are slated to be brought down. According to the Orlando Sentinel and WDWMagic.com, the original icon of the park, the Earful Tower is scheduled to be taken down later this year, with no official date specified. The 130 ft. tall, water-less water tower has stood in its place since the park’s original opening on May 1, 1989, built to resemble the Disney Studios landmark in Burbank, CA.

Also on the chopping block is the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt show. The show has been running since 2002 in Paris and 2005 in the States. The attraction has been losing speed (pun intended) in recent years, as attendance has dropped dramatically after it’s initial inception.

The show will join other less popular attractions in their closures on April 2, 2016, such as:

  • Honey! I Shrunk the Kids Play Set
  • Monster’s Inc. Meet-and-Greet
  • Writer’s Stop
  • Watto’s Grotto
  • Studio Catering Co.

These changes come as no surprise after the D23 announcement of the massive yet unnamed 14-acre Star Wars and 11-acre Toy Story Lands. Obviously, the park needs to make room for these new additions and there will inevitably be closures that not everyone is OK with. The loss of the Sorcerer Mickey Hat last year was welcomed by many, but the destruction of the classic Earful Tower seems to be a harder pill to swallow. However, with the idea that Toy Story Land will be the East Coast Cars Land, it’s safe to assume fans will be satisfied with the result, even if it means the sacrifice of a beloved icon. As Bob Iger let slip earlier in 2015, the park will be receiving a new name in the near future, so it makes sense for the Imagineers to distance themselves a bit from the original Hollywood back lot feel that the park was initially modeled after. Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to be a Disney Parks fan.
