Deadpool Review

Eight years ago in 2008 Punisher: War Zone released with a R rating. This was the last R rated Marvel movie to release before Deadpool released. In these last 8 years Fox, Sony, and especially Marvel Studios have shown little to no interest in making a R rated superhero movie. Thankfully after 11 years of pestering Fox to make a REAL Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and an extremely talented crew of film makers were able to show how the merc with a mouth can be done.

While all the trailers and posters for Deadpool go out of their way to tell you this isn’t your average superhero movie, this is still a origins story at it’s heart. Luckily the pacing of this film from beginning to end never leaves you feeling bored. The film goes back and forth with it’s storytelling to progress the plot of the story while telling you the origins of how Wade Wilson played by Ryan Reynolds became Deadpool.

Soon after meeting the love of his life Vanessa, Wade is diagnosed with cancer and this leaves him with little to no options. This leads our antihero to a secret program that would lead him into becoming cancer free, but at the cost of becoming a super powered, undying, and most impotently (to Deadpool) unattractive. Throughout the film we watch as Deadpool tries to find the man Ajax (the villain not the kitchen soap) who did this to him, force him to change him back, and finally kill him.

Tying this story together is a hilarious script featuring Deadpool and a cast of characters you might not necessarily expect to see in a Deadpool movie, but that is far from a bad thing. Even though the fourth wall breaking and internet meme version of Deadpool is how most people have heard of Deadpool I am pleased to see that this movie makes it’s own version of this insane mercenary. While he still pokes fun at all things Marvel superheros and often will literally talk directly into the camera, the jokes are well earned through great writing without feeling like a cheap laugh. The only real complaint in the whole film has to be in the fact that the film gives 80% of the jokes to Deadpool while the supporting cast stand out in the few scenes that are given. Whether it is one of two X-Men in the movie, Deadpool’s elderly blind roommate, or his old friend Weasel the jokes back and forth in every conversation bounce off the actors very well and it is easy to see that they all had a blast filming this movie.

One of the most surprising aspects this movie has to be in it’s soundtrack by Tom Holkenborg. While the original score really helps cement you into each scene, it’s use of licensed music puts it in Guardians of the Galaxy levels of good music choice. Ranging from Wham!, DMX, and many more throwbacks this really helped add even more personality to a movie literally exploding with it already.

In a era of big budget movies and superhero movies no longer being something special to see made anymore Deadpool helps prove that this genre is far from being dead by turning the genre on it’ head in the process. It is amazing to see how far this movie came along with only having a $50 million budget and never being afraid of giving it the hard R rating something this character deserves. This is not just a film anyone could easily recommend seeing as soon as possible, but is a film so fast and fun that you are doing yourself a disservice by not seeing it twice. Also whatever you do make sure you don’t leave before the end credits sequence because it has officially set the bar for a Marvel end credits scene coming out of no where.
