According to reports, Sony have begun work on a new Venom live action movie, a character that had previously appeared in Spider-Man 3, and was played by Topher Grace. While Sony has teamed with Marvel for the use of Spider-Man inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Venom is set to stand alone.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are set to be producing and overseeing the new film, with Dante Harper hired to write a script for Venom.

Venom was originally created in 1988 and was created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck.

Venom is an alien symobiote that needs a human host, which gives the human super powers and first attached itself to Spider-Man, before moving into other hosts like Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson, plus other characters like the Scorpion and even Deadpool.  While Venom has been one of Spider-Man’s most deadly villains, when Venom joined with Flash Thompson, he became a anti-hero working with the government. It’s unclear what version of the character would be used in the new movie.

Sony have tried on many occasions to work on a Venom spin-off movie, but none have ever got far.  But now Spider-Man is part of the MCU and the success of the R rated Deadpool, this could be the time for Sony to try to use these Marvel Spider-Man villains.
