The Truth About Captain America’s Ties To Hydra

A few weeks ago I reported on a controversy involving the Sentinel of Liberty and although I stand by what I had written, I am relieved to see that things are not as they seemed at the time. Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 hits shelves today and as Spencer said, more would be revealed in this issue. Well Marvel has gone ahead and revealed some of that yesterday to ComicBook.com and yes, Steve Rogers has not always been a Hydra Agent.

As predicted by many fans, Kobik, the living Cosmic Cube who restored Cap’s powers recently, did more than that. She also altered his memory, under the orders of the Red Skull himself. Steve now believes that he has been a deep cover Hydra agent since his youth. So no history altered. This move means nothing that was pre-established has been affected. Spencer has played a very smart move being able to tell his story without having to explain away 75 years of history. This also does not take away from Spencer’s story either because although Cap hasn’t been a Hydra Agent for years, HE truly believes he has.

Does this still make Cap a hero? Yes, it does not diminish his years of service or his heroics. Yet things are now drastically different as he is in a completely different mindset and has sinister goals. Worst still, he isn’t brainwashed. This is Steve Rogers doing what he believes is right. And if you look at the news, you will see how dangerous any person can be with belief on their side.

I am now in for the long haul Spencer. You hooked me with the first issue. Now the second issue is pulling me deeper into your rabbit hole. How will Cap aid Hydra going forward? What will happen when he is revealed to be a mole? I am excited to see this Wonderland Spencer is crafting and I look forward to issue #3. There is no going back now!
