WB Working On Bringing Disney Franchises To LEGO Dimensions

Ever since LEGO Dimensions was announced, gamers have been asking when could we see Disney, Marvel and Star Wars characters come to the Toys To Life game, and while Disney was still releasing new Disney Infinity content, it didn’t look like it wouldn’t happen. Then Disney announced the cancellation of Disney Infinity and the questions have kept coming.

The hit toys to life game is about to go into its second season and brings even more franchises into the game like Harry Potter, Sonic The Hedgehog, A-Team, Adventure Time, Ghostbusters and many more, will join established franchises like DC, Lord of the Rings and the Simpsons.

Recently two different journalists from Polygon & ComicBook have spoke with the team behind LEGO Dimensions about the possibility of Disney characters joining the game.

Polygon asked:

So among my first questions to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment during a recent visit to New York City was when, not if, we will see those properties come back to life, jumping from the now-defunct Disney Infinity to the blossoming Lego Dimensions.

The short answer is: Warner Bros. thinks it’s a great idea, too, and is working on it — working on it as the company continues to expand on what exactly Lego Dimensions is and how new characters will be rolled into it.

“Will they show up somewhere else?” Heder said with a smile, anticipating my question. While I noted that contracts must be difficult, and getting properties like Marvel and DC working together – especially on LEGO Dimensions’ do-anything platform, wouldn’t be an easy task, Heder gave fans of those properties some hope.

“All I can say is, our official tagline is: ‘Break the Rules.’ There are no official rules when it comes to LEGO,” Heder said, again, still grinning ear to ear. A PR rep in the room added, “They’re already partners of ours, and we’re always looking at adding new IP [Intellectual Property] into Dimensions.”

This year saw two LEGO games released, Marvel Avengers and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and they have previously made games based on Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean.  And LEGO have been releasing toys featuring Disney characters for a while now including many based on Frozen plus a huge Disney Castle set was announced recently.

So adding Disney franchises to the LEGO Dimensions isn’t as far fetched as some might have thought a year ago, while Disney Infinity was still around.

LEGO has already included properties from Warner Brothers, Paramount, Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, FOX, BBC, and more in Dimensions, so having Marvel and DC might be more tricky, Disney are looking to franchise out their characters into video games.

With LEGO Dimensions adding new content to tie in with new movies like the upcoming LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and the Ghostbusters.

Could we see a Story Pack for Star Wars Episode Eight, or perhaps a Spider-Man team up pack, or a Fun Pack with Captain Jack Sparrow in the future, to tie in with the new movie releases.  It certainly looks promising and very possible.

Unlike Disney Infinity and Skylanders, Dimensions are only using one starter pack and will constantly be adding new levels, worlds and characters to the existing game, rather than doing annualised versions.

And with LEGO Dimensions is trying to use the cancellation of Disney Infinity to its advantage, adding these addition franchises will extend the game and also convert many players to the game (I myself just got Dimensions last week).  It might be a while before we hear of any developments as the process could take a while to get deals signed and product created, but the team behind LEGO Dimensions are sending out the message that this is very close to happening.

What do you think?

This is great news! Although John Vignocchi seemed so arrogant at E3 2015 to say that Star Wars would *never* work with Lego Dimensions.

Lego and Traveler’s Tales will do the Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars IPs justice, not put out random figures in a glorified, broken tech demo with no campaign.

JV owes fans an apology. He should be embarrassed.
