At the San Diego Comic Con, Avatar director James Cameron spoke with Variety about the upcoming Avatar sequels, while promoting the Abyss 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray release.  Disney are currently building a new themed land at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom and with four movies set to be released in December 2018 (it moved out the way of Star Wars Episode VIII) and it will be followed by more sequels in December of 2020, 2022 and 2023.

James Cameron explained why he is creating four sequels:

“The Avatar story arc was originally meant to be a trilogy, but I overwrite, and my writers overwrote as well. But basically the first of the sequels cloned itself and became two films, so now it’s four films. And the studio’s very happy with it. They have an opportunity to make more money, but it’s also an opportunity to spend a lot more money, too, so there’s a clench factor.“

Disney will be looking forward to having Avatar being a major force at the box office over the next decade, following the investment in the new area at the Animal Kingdom and following some concept art being revealed for the now cancelled Disney Infinity game, Avatar and Disney are set to be connected for a while.
