A Spoiler-ish Review of Disney’s Pete’s Dragon
Disney has added another live action film to its repertoire. A staple of early Disney live-action films was Walt Disney’s fanciful animated characters interacting with real-life people. Disney’s Pete’s Dragon combines traditional Disney animated films with modern live-action ones. A far cry from the 1977 film, this updated remake still holds the same charm and excitement as the original. While the original film was rooted in its time, an obvious product of the 1970s, this modern retelling will remain timeless.
The film, starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford, begins with the introduction of Pete and a re-imagined version of Elliott the dragon. The narration by Redford matches wonderfully with Pete’s adventures early on by creating a storybook-like atmosphere, setting the tone for the remainder of the film. A playful rivalry is established between Howard and her on-screen fiancé; She is a park ranger and he runs a lumber company. The antagonist, played by Karl Urban, takes the rivalry too far and often goes against his brother’s wishes, cutting down too many trees in the town’s beloved forest. Naturally, Elliott is against these actions and makes his presence known to Urban’s band of hunters.
The charm of the original film lives on in this remake. While it is not a musical like its
predecessor, the songs included enhance the emotions and fit well with the ambiance of the film. Stunning visuals are paired with a simplistic story, good characterization, and the message that a family can be formed through friendship. Even though the screenplay was designed for children, adults will enjoy a film that requires no thought and delivers an important message.
While different from the 1970s original, Pete’s Dragon maintains the same level of charm, wonder, and excitement as its predecessor.
