Game Review: Kellogg’s Captain America: Civil War VR App

Since VR (Virtual Reality) apps have become more popular over the recent months, here is a look at a VR app that was released a couple of months to coincide with the release of Captain America: Civil War and has gotten a bit of a surge in popularity recently with the forthcoming release of the movie on home media in the beginning of September. Here is a look at the Captain America: Civil War VR app.

NOTE: This app can either be played with or without a VR viewer. Most of the screen shots are taken with the VR setting on, as the non-VR setting is limited on what levels can be played, etc.

In Captain America: Civil War VR, you can choose to either be Captain America or Iron Man to progress in the levels to unlock… well, not much. I thought that eventually you would be able to play as a multitude of different characters, but in reality you only unlock their character profiles. The only characters that you can normally play are Cap and Tony. However, if you were lucky enough to unlock Black Panther via a special scan of specialty marked Kellogg’s products in Walmart, you could play with him as well.

The game is not difficult in the least, and primarily geared towards children. To progress in the level, one must with the VR equipment to look around, find enemies, and focus on the long enough to activate their powers (shield throw for Captain America, repulsor bursts for Iron Man). So, all you basically do is look around and find things. Pretty simple.

That being said, the action goes on 360 degrees around you. I easily got dizzy if I did this while standing up, or better yet knocked into things like the side of my desk or a chair. I quickly found that being stationary on a swivel chair that moves all the way around was a great solution for me.

Eventually, you get to fight Crossbones, the first major boss in the game. Same thing as before, though he fights you in a few rounds, so it takes a while.

In addition to playing the levels, you can also view trailers for the movie, and view Kellogg’s advertisements for more freebies that you can get in stores by scanning or buying items.

To be honest, by the time I beat Crossbones, I was basically done with the game. Sure, there were more levels to explore, but the game play just did not hold my interest. I do like the VR viewers that came out with the promotion, however.

Released by Kellogg’s in supermarkets here in the US, these cardboard viewers were FREE with the purchase of Kellogg’s products. I am not sure if any stores still have them or not, as I got mine back in late April, early May. I do know that locally the promotion was either not known or not cared about, because I think I might have been the only one to have gotten them from my supermarket. In addition to the Captain America and Iron Man viewers you see here, folks could have signed up for a limited edition Black Panther one online. Sadly, that promotion quickly came to capacity, so I do not have one of those.

Overall: is it an app to have on your device? I personally don’t think so for myself. However, I am sure if you are a fan of the movie or your children are fans of the characters, then this would be a great time killer. While the viewers are nice, not sure they have any value beyond the game app, but I could be totally wrong. I guess we will wait and see.
