Disney To Drain & Fill Abandoned River Country Pool
Walt Disney World’s abandoned water park, River Country, is set to go under construction soon as Disney will be draining the large pool, known as the Upstream Plunge, and filling it in.
There are many reasons why this pool is being filled in now, while Disney have said this work has been planned for a while, following the recent incident involving a Alligator and warnings about the Zika virus, this may have sped up plans. With a large pool containing standing water, which will attract mosquitoes and Disney will want to avoid having children wandering into the area, which is near Mickey’s Backyard BBQ at Disney’s Fort Wilderness campground.
However there are also rumours that Disney is planning on using the area to build some new Disney Vacation Club buildings.
The pool originally contained 330,000 gallons of water and the park was originally opened in 1976 and closed in 2001.
Our Take:
I’m surprised Disney have taken so long to take this action, from a safety point of view, leaving water attended, which was originally built for fun, does seem like a accident waiting to happen.
