Third Star Wars Story Movie Coming In 2020

Disney have announced that Lucasfilm will be releasing a third anthology Star Wars film set in 2020.   The chief executive Bob Iger said the scheduled film would form a trilogy with this December’s Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo spinoff film starring Alden Ehrenreich.  These movies will all fall under the “A Star Wars Story” brand.

Bon Iger also said he does not expect the box-office receipts from Rogue One to hit the same highs that The Force Awakens reached.  However he quickly reassured that “the level of interest in [Rogue One] is as high as it was for Force Awakens.” He then added, “we love what we’ve seen.”

This will make 2020 the sixth year running for a new Star Wars movie, with Force Awakens in 2015, Rogue One coming later this year and will be follows by episode VIII in 2017, Han Solo in 2018 and episode IX in 2019.

And that won’t be the last Star Wars movie, Bob Iger has stated that he’s already begun to speak with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy about plans for 2021 and beyond.

Our Take:

It’s not a huge surprise to see Disney doing a third “Story” movie, it had been rumoured to be a Boba Fett stand alone movie but nothing has been officially announced, but it could also feature Darth Vader and characters from Rogue One.   And it’s not shocking to hear Disney are planning movies past 2020 as Star Wars is a major part of Disney’s long term plan.
