The writer of Disney’s Academy Award-winning Inside Out has joined the directorial team for Disney’s upcoming animated feature, Gigantic. Meg LeFauve, who is also co-writing the upcoming Captain Marvel film, teams up with Nathan Greno who previously co-directed Tangled. The film is scheduled to be released in November 2018, but has been developed quietly until it was officially announced at D23 in 2015.

The film itself is inspired by the traditional story of Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a new and modern twist. Instead of Jack meeting a menacing giant, it is a young female giant that greets him. Gigantic will be a musical, with Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez tapped to write the songs. A directing duo has been a common occurrence in recent years with Disney Animation. Chris William and Don Hall directed Big Hero 6, Rich Moore and Byron Howard directed Zootopia, and Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck directed Frozen.

With a November 2018 release date, Disney is aiming for another Academy Award contender. In the past, movies like Frozen and Tangled were released at this same time, eventually leading to nominations in numerous categories.
