Dream It Screw It! Review

Dream It! Screw It! is a parody book by Geoffrey Golden, based around the character “Dipp Disney”, Walt’s long lost cousin, who joins the Imagineering department and comes up with many insane, if sometimes slightly funny ideas for attractions at the theme parks.
The book is split between two different styles, one is a spoof biography, of a basic stereotype “Moonshine drinking idiot” who has been bumbling his way through Disney and life, and the other half is based on his designs, giving us some concept art and a description, based on these fail park attractions like the Coca-Colaquarium, Hoverstaurant, Hindenburg Sky Resort and many others based on original attractions like the Stinky, Drinky Pirates, Haunted Mansons and the Enchanted Cu Chi Room.

One thing that did stand out was the great artwork included in this book, the concept art for some of the attractions works really well in telling the joke visually and I would have a little chuckle when I turned the page to discover the next one. But once I started to read the description for each attraction, it never matched my initial reaction to the artwork.
The design of the book is very well presented, it’s easy to read and I liked the little post-it notes giving a little more information, usually with a fun little comment about how the Imagineers reacted to the crazy idea, which I found slightly amusing.

I’ll be totally honest, I didn’t find this book that entertaining. Maybe I just didn’t get the joke or isn’t my type of humour. If you are thinking of picking this book up, maybe check the preview or have a quick flip through it. You might like the style of humour and in that case, it might be for you.

It’s very clear that the writer had done plenty of research into many Disney biographies and books, as they are having a little bit of fun with Disney history. But had the book just been filled with terrible theme park attractions without the “Dipp Disney” biography, I’d have enjoyed this a little more, as I just didn’t find that aspect of the book funny at all.

Dream It! Screw It! is a bit like marmite, i think you’ll either love it or hate it.  However for a couple of dollars for a digital version, it’s might be worth you checking out yourself.
