New International Box Office Record for Disney

2016 is now The Walt Disney Studios’ best year ever at the international box office with $3,566.4 million through October 16, surpassing Disney’s previous record year of $3,565.2 million set in 2015.

Earlier this year, on July 6, Disney set a new industry record for reaching the $3 billion threshold internationally, having also set new industry records for reaching $2 billion domestic (July 16) and $5 billion global (July 10). The international milestone comes with two-and-a-half months and three major releases remaining in the calendar year: Marvel’s Doctor Strange begins its international rollout October 25, ahead of its November 4 domestic debut; Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana opens on November 23; and Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debuts on December 16.

Disney’s 2016 box office has been driven by films from across the Studios’ brands, representing the industry’s top four global and top three international releases of the year.

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War has earned $1.15 billion, including $745 million internationally; it is the No. 1 film of the year internationally and globally.

Disney Animation’s Zootopia has earned $1.023 billion, including $682.3 million internationally; it is the biggest animated film ever released in China with $235 million. It is the No. 2 film of the year internationally and globally.

Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book has earned $966 million globally, including $602.3 million internationally; it is the top Western film of all time in India. It is the No. 3 film of the year internationally and the No. 4 film of the year globally.

Pixar’s Finding Dory has earned $1.011 billion, including $525.9 million internationally; still in release, it is the No. 3 film of the year globally and the No. 6 film of the year internationally.

In addition, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which debuted in December 2015, brought in $452.4 million of its $1.13 billion international total in 2016.
