Disney have begun a test called “Custodial of Tomorrow,” at Walt Disney World by using iPhones to track some of its custodial workers and to send them to a specific location for a task.   The trial begun on Sunday with 40 employees at Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland and will run through to January 14th 2017.

This new system is being opposing by Unite Here Local 362, which represents the resort’s janitors saying that custodians might lose seniority over choosing their assignments, their privacy and plus what discipline could be used against employees if a iPhone is lost or damaged.

Unite Here Local 362 spokesperson Eric Clinton said “What is the purpose?  Are they trying to determine that a specific worker spends too much time in a certain area? Are they trying to determine that some workers walk faster than others? They haven’t told us. These things are very concerning.”

Disney released a statement saying “this new approach will enable us to deploy Cast Members in real time, to areas that need service, ultimately making the Cast and Guest experiences even better.”

There will also be electronic sensors in restrooms and garbage cans, indicating if they need cleaning after a certain number of guests have used them or emptying a garbage can when it reaches three-quarters filled.

This continues a trend of companies using GPS to track delivery companies or trucks, and continues to build on tracking where vehicles, products and if staff have been taking their breaks or taking too long a break.

However the union is saying that Disney never negotiated with them over these issues.
