Moana: Rhythm Run Review
Disney’s latest mobile game featuring Moana is called Rhythm Run, a side strolling endless runner game, where you control Moana and Maui, smashing through or jump over objects, in line with the soundtrack from the animated classic.
Rhythm Run is pretty addicting, the drive to get as far as you can and plowing through the levels because the challenge can be really enjoyable. If you want that extra challenge, you can increase the speed, which offers some replay value.
When I started to play the game, I did feel this game did feel a little too generic and didn’t offer too much more than any other runners, however the soundtrack is one of the major aspects of the game, so playing with the volume up is a much more enjoyable experience and is one of the reasons why this game is a good recommendation for fans of the movie.
Graphically the game isn’t groundbreaking as I found the artwork of the characters a little basic, however the backgrounds do look bright and colourful, which add to the experience. The controls are pretty simple though takes a little practice to get to grips with the timing.
The game is priced at $4.99 and features 70 levels, retelling key moments of the movie. Because it is a paid app, it doesn’t feature the constant requests for additional purchases of currency like “gems”, extra characters or levels, which I believe it the best way of experiencing small games.
As a more traditional gamer, I do prefer this method since “free to play” games can be very predatory for purchases from kids, so I’m happy to see Disney developing titles like this. Though I wish they offered a demo version for people to try a single level before buying it, as I’m sure more people would like to see what the game is, especially when most mobile players are used to playing for free.
I do think Disney are making the right decision in their approach to creating paid apps that offer much more value, but I do think had this game been around the $3 area, it would be a easy recommendation, at $5, its feels slightly overpriced.
For young players, this is a great little game to enjoy, plenty of levels and the music aspect of the game does make it unique enough, however for me, it wasn’t anything much more than an average experience. Having the different playable characters and options, did mix it up, but these eventually all feel so similar.
Moana Rhythm Run is a fun little game and will keep younger players, however without the music, the game is just a generic running game, but with it turned on, that little Disney magic does make it that much more enjoyable and worth downloading.
