Spanish-Language Movie Dub Deal Signed by Disney

MyLingo, a startup app, has reached a multiyear deal with Disney, Paramount Pictures, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Now, Spanish-speaking moviegoers have more options at cinemas when they want the film in Spanish. For just $1.99, audiences can download a studio-recorded Spanish track that syncs to the English-speaking film currently on screen. Using headphones, the moviegoer can listen in real-time. However, the app is currently only available for Apple’s iOS devices. Current Disney releases covered under this deal are Moana and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Testing for the app began back in the summer with Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory followed by Doctor Strange in the fall. Using the iPhone’s microphone, the MyLingo app is able to “listen” to a film’s audio and identify the movie through a proprietary algorithm. Then, the app syncs the studio-sanctioned Spanish versions of the film, a sound file that is deleted immediately after the film finishes.
